Haunted when the minutes DragThe Bride August 1959,around 3 pm. In a village in the south of Italy named Cocito. Grey and sky-blue structures,narrow streets,shutters closed,doors open, light curtains that barely move,caressed by a stifling breeze.Silence. Perhaps some cicadas in love,some gimpy cats waiting for something to chance by.In a cornfield,where the undulating waves of heat mesh with and blur all contours,appears the figure of a young woman. She passes quickly,going somewhere in a hurry. Wearing a white wedding dress,blanched under the sun.On her wrist, a large orologio d'oro.Her hair a swallow's nest,plastered on her forehead,bathed in sweat,remnants of a very elaborate hairdo,inlaid of pink flowers that now went lank. She walked rapidly,a bit awkwardly in that dress and those white heels dirty from the ground. Periodically she'd check her watch and hasten her step(presse le pas). Coming to rest in front of a working-class apt. building, a hint of a smile seemed to crease her pallid lips. She went to the 3rd floor,there were 2 doors, one said Cripisi,the other,the Topazio family. She seemed disconcerted,her brow crinkled. She rang the Cripisi bell.An elderly woman in a housecoat and acrylic hair listlessly came to the door: "Excuse me,i'm terribly sorry to disturb you,i'm looking for Miss Mantice... Mantice? Never heard of her... You've never heard of her? Mantice! Mantice! Now look hear.Next door lives the Topazio family, on the 2nd floor the Barras,then there is my husband's family,and... Mantice! Ma you are certain? I thought..." The girl looked at her watch with regret: "Va bene,ma'am,i understand", and started to go down the steps. The old woman called after her: "If you wait a moment i'll ask the lady on the 5th floor, she knows everything about everybody!" The message caught up with her,like an echo, ma she got no response,the bride was already long-gone, down the hot dusty street. The following day,the lady Cripisi was chatting on the landing with Mrs. Topazio,and she recounted this episode which was so "strange and mysterious". "At the door,with it being 3 in the afternoon,mind you,a girl in a wedding dress,everything shining white,at 3 in the afternoon!...Well,you can imagine my amazement! She was looking for someone,i told her this person didn't live here, and she left so fast like she was nabbed by the slipstream." "And who was she looking for?",asked Mrs. Topazio. "Hmmm...she said a young woman,a certain...Mantice,i believe it was. -Mantice you say...and what did she look like,this girl? Red hair,large eyes,a pale little thing.On her wrist,a large gold watch..... Reeling.Vortex,bringing her to her knees.Tonia closed her eyes so not to lose her balance. Her breathing grew shallow......O God,she had waited so long.........
