Ode To Azia Fan Q&A with Asia Argento

Fans from all over the world submitted questions for Asia to answer on August 2005. The questions
were answered by Miss Argento on September 15, 2005. Huge thanks, Asia! :)
Myself... Mariana from Brazil
You've been acting non-stop since you were nine and you've only taken a break for 3 years during your teen years. Did you feel the need to take time off? Was it because of the bad experience you had while shooting "Palombella Rossa"? Did you enjoy these years away from the screen and the sets? How was your life as a normal teenager? At what point did you decide that you wanted to keep acting?
Actually I didn't work non-stop : just a movie a year. Between ages 13&16 I went through a very awkward puberty. What we call in Italy the "Beauty of the Donkey": everyone thinks the donkey is cute when he's little, but when he doesn't grow to be a horse he's just another donkey. I did a couple of auditions for (unmemorable) movies and was turned down. Palombella Rossa was a definitely a bad experience, but only because I was very alone in the set in Sicily, my parents couldn't take me to the set, so the production had hired me an assistant that was supposed to be my supervisor on the shoot. I never formulated the thought, I'm gonna quit acting for a bit, I'm going to live my life now. It was a natural transition. During my 3 teenage years, I tried to be like the rest of them, to mingle. I was a hippie I was a burnout I was a dropout I was out of my head I was a surfer I had a skateboard I was so heavy man, I lived on the strand I was so wasted I was so fucked up I was so messed up I was so screwed up I was out of my head I was so jacked up I was so drunk up I was so knocked out, I was out of my head I was so wasted I was wasted. I even had friends, I mean a whole group of them, the kind where you all know each other and hangout. A few people I met back then are still part of my life. Anyway, at age 16, a raver and a head-banger, I made my comeback with Michele Placido on Le Amiche Del Cuore. You know, the incest movie. For the first time in my so-called career, while I was being tested on film, I realized I could fascinate, grab people attention, and ultimately, act. The thrill I got from that was a lot more exciting than the joints I used to smoke with the kids at the park.
Did you always know you wanted to be a director? I once read an interview that dates back of when you were 13 and you said you wanted to become a director in the future, just like your father. Was it a conscientious desire? And how did you get involved in your first experience as a director, the short film you made for "DeGenerazione"? Were you asked to take part in it or did you have to go after it?
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a writer or a director. I wrote a movie age 5 or 6 called Ç Quella strana bambina della casa abbandonata È. Can't remember the plotline, must've been a horror. I even shot some of it with a super 8 my father had given me for my birthday. I've never seen those reels. I don't own a single thing from my childhood. There're very few pictures of me as a young puppy.
My father has always despised actors, I remember his look of contempt when I told him I was contemplating becoming an actress. He asserted he knew somehow I'd become a director. My mother wasn't keen on me starting to work at such a young age, she strongly recommended not to follow her path.
When I was 17, a friend at the time - Alex Infascelli, a film director with whom I used to have a punk band called Neat Squeeze, aka - Kid's Sparkle Fun, introduced me to the Degenerazione production. They were looking for a woman director to join in the project, and asked me to come up with an idea for a 3 minute short. I realized that I had no clue about the technical aspect, and my DP wasn't very helpful. I pulled it off somehow, pretending and deceiving the whole crew. My favourite shot is a crane flying over two guys carrying a mirror. It's a pov shot, in which you see my red doc martins fly over while reflected on the mirror. That was the 1st and last time I shot in 35mm.
Do you have a favorite perfume or one that you use more often?
Amber is my favourite scent. I've used Ambre by Reminiscence for a few years. I don't wear perfume everyday, nor on special occasions.
Who's your favorite photographer and why? Do you have any plans of releasing a book with your work as a photographer? What do you look for when taking a picture? Do you have a favorite theme?
Boris Mikhailov. Cindy Sherman. Jim Goldberg. I owe a lot to Jurgen Teller if I picked up photography. He made it look so simple and unpretentious. I am working on a photography book, but don't feel I'm quite there yet. I've always used Contax, but a few months ago a dude named Mike Justice stole my Contax G2 at my LA farewell party. I met the guy on the Internet, he said he was a fan, he seemed like a nice person, and so I invited him. Not only he wrote an absurd blog stating things I was supposed to have said or done which were totally false, but he also divulged my home address, (not openly but in a way you could have figured it out if you weren't an idiot) he just took my camera and left. After a few months, for a reason I still ignore, he wrote me an email in which he confessed and repented. Now the G2 is back, but I haven't had the courage to use it yet. It feels raped, it's not my baby no more. I just got a new digital Contax, been experimenting a lot with
it.
How was the idea of a collaboration with Miss Sixty born? I read you used their clothes while shooting "The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things" and they contacted you asking if you'd like to be their new face and that it's the first they have a famous person as their model.
I like Wicky Hassan, the president and creator of the brand. We had lunch a year ago and everything evolved naturally from there. Best thing about the whole testimonial thing, apart from meeting and being photographed by Jean Baptiste Mondino, the most charming, best music taste, funniest man that ever lived, is that I actually dig the clothes, they're not embarrassing like most fashion, I actually feel comfortable wearing them.
How was your experience as a professional boxer? How did you break your nose?
I'll admit I've romanticized the whole boxing thing quite a
bit.
Do you play any instruments?
I wasn't given the chance to study any instrument as a little girl. A couple of years ago Morgan bought me a beautiful transparent-blue Ludwig from the 60's. I play the drums, but very primitively. Maureen Tucker and Christine Doll Rod are my favorite drummers.
Will you ever act again in a film directed by yourself?
Doubt it. Never say never.
Are there any project you've been asked to work in and you refused or couldn't make it because of your schedule that you regret not being part of?
I regret not being able to work with Bertrand Bonello (director of Cindy, The Doll Is Mine) on Tiresia, because I was in the States preparing THIDAAT.
What is your position towards religion? Do you consider yourself as a religious person? What are your beliefs?
God is a concept by which we can measure our pain. I just believe in me. Yoko and me. And that's reality. The dream is over. What can I say?
What does your two new tattoo mean? Many speculate that the one on your ribs is the Marilyn Manson logo or two "As" as in your initials, or "M" for Morgan, etc...
The double Anarchy = M, is the Ministry logo. As much as I love the band... To me it stands for Asia, Anna and Morgan. He has the same tattoo on his arm.
How do you feel about the paparazzi?
Either you're a soldier from the start, or an actor with a record deal tryin to play the part. It's a shame, niggaz in the film game only for the money and the fame. It's a shame, actors in the rap game only for the money and the fame
Paparazzi (2x)
If it's not too personal or private, could you please let us know if you had a hard time when you were a child? A lof of articles like to focus on that phase in your life, including some quotes in which you said that your father said that you were ugly and smelled like shit.
I wouldn't go back to my childhood for anything in the world. Childhood is ugly. It smells like shit.
You said more than once at several interviews that you weren't offered work as an actress in Italy. Has it changed? Would you like to work there again?
I'd like to work in my home country, at least to be closer to my family. There's nothing going on in Italian cinema right now. Nothing worth remembering or looking forward to. Sadly, it's been like that for a few decades. Petit bourgeois films made for the petit bourgeoisie.
Are men afraid to approach you because you come out as a strong and self-confident woman?
I should get heart-breaker tattooed on my forehead.
What do you usually carry in your bag?
Money. Keys. Lipstick. Cigs and lighter. A photo of Anna Lou and a drawing she made of us two.
Do you feel some responsibility because you're famous?
I follow my life, only. I suggest you do the same. I mean follow yours, please, not
mine.
What are some of the negative sides of celebrity?
No more mystery.
What people would be surprised to find out about you?
That all the crazy things I've said about myself were actually true...
Do you ever wish you could go back to another time? If you were given one do-over, anything in your life, what would it be?
The other night I received one of those dreadful chain e-mail which was supposed to make your wish come true. I tried so hard to formulate one... But I realized I had none. It scared the crap outta me. My wish is to find a wish.
Do you follow a healthy diet?
When I'm forced to by my ulcerous stomach. I like chocolate. Anything sweet. It gives me pimples though. Damned pimples.
Who did you fancy most when you were a kid?
My two older sisters, the coolest brats in the hood. Roland Orzabal from Tears for Fears. Bastian, the kid from the NeverEnding Story. Anthony, a character in the Japanese cartoon called Candy Candy.
Do you feel more comfortable acting in a specific language
or it doesn't matter?
French is still a little troublesome for me.
Italian-English best bets.
Once I was asked to act in dutch.
I had the presumption to believe it made no difference.
But I never got the chance to prove myself wrong.
Elliot from Belgium
I'd like to know: Are there any movie parts you regret having turned down?
Non, rien de rien. Non, je ne regrette rien.
Maybe there are parts you are glad you refused, but we'd like to know about?
Nothing that you'd like, really.
Have there been occasions where you wanted a movie role, but you didn't get it?
I don't think I ever really wanted - I mean desperately wanted - a movie role.
Tom from the United
States
Any plans of writing and publishing at least one more book? Anything from a book similar your first title, to an autobiography?
I've had writer's block for the past 4 years.
Mario from Italy
Forse ancor
più di quanto vorrei.
Sometimes people say that some characters live a private life besides the movie itself. What do you think Anna Battista is doing nowadays? What is your
relationship with her, now, in 2005?
I feel a little embarrassed when I think I'm her mother. She's my dumb child, and even though I don't wish to parade around the world with her anymore, I love her nonetheless.
Desiree from California, United States
I just wanted to know what kind of music inspires you, and if you will ever consider music as your main career?
Inspiration is a vast word. My favorite is the kind of music I'd kill myself with. What I call Sadcore music.
Ivan from Spain
How was it to work with someone you're in a relationship with?
Complete utopia, that's why I aspire to it.
Are you going to make another "huge" (meaning Hollywood trash) movie just to promote yourself a little bit more because you're more of an independent actress?
Future is something that transcends my control.
How about working on a horror movie like "Land of the Dead"? Is there some difference in terms of acting? I mean, all those feelings (run, cry, scream...) Did you have to prepare mentally and did you have a great time playing your character in such a different movie?
I prepared mostly physically, Slack had to look totally different from Sarah (THIDAAT). I started exercising 2, 3 hours a day. Best part of the whole Land of the Dead experience was working out with my wing chun si-fu Ryan Kennedy. And hanging out at the Bovine Sex Club (not what you think! It's a punk bar). I wanna give a big shout out to all my peeps in Toronto -- Miss ya'll! Canadians rule!! I've never been as social as the time I was there. Hopefully never will. Again.
Beatrice from Italy
I really apreciated “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things”. The directing style and the themes of the movie reminded me the American Independent Cinema that began with “Rumble Fish” by Francis Ford Coppola and that continued with “Drugstore Cowboy”. It also seems to me that you broach the theme of insanity with the same truthfulness used by John
Cassavetes in “A Woman Under the Influence”. I’d like to know if you’ve watched these movies and if you were (consciounsly or unconsciously) inspired by them. Or perhaps they’re only my wrong intuitions :-)
Thank you, Beatrice
Out of the 3 movies you mentioned, I've only seen Drugstore Cowboy. It had a huge impact on my - if not everybody's - sense of beauty, growing up.
Spence
Your portrayal of women is something that I find separates you from many renowned female thespians in the past and nowadays. Your performance as Sarah in the controversial adaptation of THIDAAT, a character so readily demonised, was endearingly poignant without siding with a particular stance. How are you able to sustain a character's "mortality" or what have you while maintaining your objectivity?
So hypnotized by the use of thespian that the rest of your question kind of blurred away, fluorescently liquefying on the screen.
I'm sorry Spence, what was your question?
Brandy Henry from the United
States
The question that I would like to ask is: If there was just one piece of advice that you could pass on to someone, according to your experiences in life, what would that be?
Don't believe the hype.
Corinna Spehle from Germany
What does it mean to be free for you?
Cool hands from the get-go... Can your feast on the real one? Don't be in love with the autograph. Just be in love when you love that song on and on. Free.
Samira from Turkey
Do you have a tip for us girls on how to conquer guys and feeling sexy?
Stop shaving your armpits.
Natalia from Russia
Do you plan to have more kids?
A Gipsy lady told my mother I'm going to have two more.
Kristen from the United
States
Hi Asia. I know that you've published several books. Do you still write and what are your favorite subjects to write about? Thanks.
Writer's block, baby. I've been collecting letters of ex lovers, guys I've seduced and abandoned. I plan to release them, but I can't call that writing, right? More like stealing. Which is what I used to do when I could write anyhow.
Kathryn from the United
States
What do you like to do when you're not doing all the things we otherwise consider you famous for (acting, producing, making and spinning music)?
I try to live, because that's the best thing that's happened to me since I was born.
What is your favorite quote?
"Live fast, die old"
Raven from the United States
Out of all the songs you spin, which is your most favorite song
to play?
California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys.
Max from France
Est ce que tu aimerais collaborer avec Quentin Tarantino un jour ou alors ça ne t'intéresse pas du tout? / Would you like to work with Quentin Tarantino someday, or are you not interested at all?
Uhm, lemme think...
Si George Romero te propose un rôle dans un de ses prochains films, l'accepteras-tu? / If George Romero would offer you a role in one of his next movies, would you accept it?
I hope one day we'll get to do Diamond Dead, a dark comedy horror musical we were supposed to do before LOTD got green light.
Tu a récemment parlé d'un projet d'album. Quel genre de musique voudrais-tu faire? Recently you spoke about working on an album. What kind of music would you like it to be?
Primitive electropunk rhythm'n'blues from the early 90s.
Baron Scarpia
I'd like to ask if you'll be appearing in more mainstream films, or prefer to stick to more low budget productions.
I'd like to make good movies.
Juan Espinoza from
Venezuela
Hi there Miss Argento, I love all your work, especially when you're behind the camera.
You've worked with many directors all different from each other in terms of style and themes (Dario Argento, Michael Radford, Abel Ferrara, to name a a few) who are the ones which have influenced you the most?
Abel Ferrara is my mentor, the main man. One of the most incredible minds that I've encountered on a film set. I learned a lot from him, stole so much from him, forever grateful for whatever it is I've absorbed from him.
Which director are you looking forward to work with? And what are your next directorial projects?
Looking forward working with Tony Gatlif and Catherine Breillat. No directorial projects yet.
Hope you'll keep working!
And Good Luck!
P.S: by the way, I loved Scarlet Diva
Aurore from France
Avez-vous des projets musicaux autres que vos mix?
Do you have any other musical projects other than your mixings?
I've been wanting to do a record for quite sometime. Morgan says he's going to help me. Lately I've collaborated with Archigram, a French electronic band, on a song I've sang and written the lyrics for. It's called I am Poison. This is the first verse:
I'M POISON A BAD EXAMPLE
A DARK HAIRED WITCH A ROTTEN APPLE
WISH I KNEW WHAT WAS IN MY MIND
I'M NOT PART OF YOUR HUMAN KIND
I DID EVERYTHING I COULD IN THIS LIFE
AND STILL MANAGED TO GET IT WRONG
AND SO MY DEATH WILL BE A FAVOR
TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE LOVED
Laura McDonald from the United
States
Asia, since your father is such an iconic figure in the realm of horror cinema, and you have clearly adopted his brilliant skills as a director, I was curious if you've thought about tackling the horror genre yourself as a director, or possibly collaborating with your father on such a project? Could you bring some freshness to the beautiful, but lately suffering, world of horror?
I could never compete with the Maestro.
If I could ask Asia a second question, I would love to know what modern actors or actresses you admire or consider the most talented. In other words, who would you choose to work with on a film if you could pick anyone.
I imagine James Gandolfini to be a true pleasure to direct.
Marcus from the United
States
What ever happened to the explicit sex "art movie" you were planning to direct in Prague?
Too controversial.
What are your plans for your next directing project, Asia?
I can't start thinking of a new movie to write, not until the Heart is released everywhere and I can finally stop talking about it.
Mike from the United
States
What is happiness?
A warm gun.
Yaron from Israel
I'd like to ask Asia to list 3 guilty pleasures of her (movie wise)
The Day After Tomorrow, Van Helsing, Hulk.
mandroid51 - Dave from Ontario, Canada
Hi Asia! I`m a big fan, even of your bad movies! I was wondering what directors do you still want to work with, and are you helping your old man with the 'Three Mothers'?" If not, you should be! Seriously!!
Roman Polanski is the only director I dream of working with. My old man doesn't need my help for the Three Mothers. On the other hand it would be great if my mother collaborated with him on the script again, like they did on Suspiria and Inferno.
Camila Vieira de Souza from Florianópolis, Brazil
You should make a movie with Johnny Depp. I think you match on screen. Is there any chance?
I confess, I have a major crush on Johnny Depp, so what? Who doesn't? How embarrassing to reduce myself by the same standard as everybody's. Hello, my name is Asia and I am a fan-pyre.
Priscilla from Brasília, Brazil
Do you think that being beautiful affects your career? If it does, how does it affect? Does it bother you if someone is your fan only because you're beautiful and not because of your talent?
Hell no! Both (beauty and talent) are illusions. Inside me I feel alone and unreal.
Do you know Jared Leto in person or know his work as an actor or with his band? Is there any chance you will be working together in the future?
I don't see a Leto at the end of the tunnel.
Anthony from the United
States
When will you be spinning next in NYC??? Had a great time when you were DJ-ing here a few months back even if it was at the Tribeca Grand. your afterparty at the Tribeca Grand a few months back was pretty sweet (even though you weren't too fond of the location, as I recall) thx!
Actually I might spin at the end of the week in NY, not sure yet where or when! I'll email Mariana if I do. It was a fun night, the speakers died in the end, which is always a good sign.
Inferno from England
Other than your family, does it matter to you what people think of you?
Depending on my level of fragility or numbness I can either be affected or detached like olive oil in water.
Living in L.A., do you feel that you have managed to avoid the worst aspects of the whole 'movie star' type of lifestyle?
I spent all my money renting a huge house where I never invited anyone, nobody found out what a big shot I was. Dammit.
What do you find enjoyable about djaying?
Being around people yet protected by headphones and turntables. Communicating through music, avoiding mindless conversations... yet being able to give a flash, a feeling, something.
Mike Justice
Okay, so on the commentary track for Scarlet Diva, you mention how much you (at that time) detested Gus Van Sant, but you didn't mention why. Now you're in his latest movie? What gives?
Meet Mike "Justice", the guy that stole my camera at my farewell party in LA.
Sergio Olivari from Canary Islands
Will we ever see a collaboration between Asia and Bruce Labruce - apart from pictures featured on Bruce´s site I mean?
I love Bruce's work and we might do a gay porn movie together one day. Just kidding.
Chris Storm from Massachusetts, United States
What is your preferred style of music to play when you DJ? Do you have any particular musical/DJ influences or "idols"? If so, who are they? (I ask because I'm a struggling wannabe DJ myself.)
I started Djayin' cause I didn't like the music I heard in clubs or bars. The only Dj who lives the life he talks about in his songs is Lory D from Rome. Hearing him spin is like a mystical experience.
Adam from Hong Kong
Would you ever consider writing a soundtrack? This way you can unite two of your passions: cinema and music.
I can hardly keep the tempo on a drum, imagine directing a whole orchestra!
Tony Whitaker from Virginia Beach, VA, United States
In "Scarlet Diva", was the lecherous director supposed to represent a real director? The actor reminded me a lot of George Lucas.
That's so funny, how did you come up with that? I had no particular director in mind when writing the character.
Antoine from
France
Are you really going to be part of the remake of Brian
DePalma’s Sisters?
It looks very likely I’m going to be in Doug Buck’s remake of sisters. The
director is very talented, I’ve known him for a long time. I’m happy to work
again with Ed Pressman. One of the last inspired producers in the US. I had a
great time, so to speak, working with him on New Rose Hotel.
Bart from the Netherlands
I was wondering what was your personal favourite of the three films you made with Dario: 'Trauma', 'The Stendhal Syndrome' or 'Phantom of the Opera'?
Stendhal.
Kyle from the United States
Out of all the films your father has made, what one is your personal favorite and why?
Profondo Rosso, Suspiria and Inferno because of my mother's influence. She was his "terrible muse", somehow forged his cinema, his views on life. Whether he likes to admit it or not. I am just one of the many fruits of their collaboration
Jeff Arent the United States
Asia, will you ever make an appearence in Texas, United States?
I don't see why not.
Lucia Carrasquero from Venezuela
How do you do to keep your figure in such a good shape?
Sport binges do the trick. By the way, I just had a déjà vu! These are the same kind of questions I'm asked on Scarlet Diva's titles!
Lauren Gabriel
Are you fluent in Spanish?
Can't even stutter in Spanish.
Emilie from Belgium
Is it true that you dated Vincent Gallo and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers? And that you said that actors are dull lovers because of JRM? I know that you were disappointed with Vincent Gallo by the time you shot "Scarlet Diva" because he asked you for too much money to play Kirk, but you now you'll be working with him in "Coin Locker Babies"? Are you friends again?
Vinny G, we never dated, we were only so-called friends. He loves to torture women by making them fall in love with him and then humiliating them. He broke my heart twice, second time I asked him to be the DP for the Heart. He had a temper tantrum when he found out I was meeting other directors of photography. He's refused to talk to me ever since. We are both attached to Coin Locker Babies, but I'm not sure what role he's supposed to play. Jonny was not a dull lover at all. He was very young and tormented. Needed care and reassurance. I think I might have broken his heart back then. "Gotta let the Hearts know when they're gonna be a-breakin'"
Julia from France
How was it to work with the Sprouse twins? Do you keep in touch?
My dream is to work again with Dylan and Cole. I had an extraordinary experience working with Dylan (he did most of the spoken scenes). My dream would be to capture him on film throughout his life, like Truffaut did with Léaud.
Agatha from Greece
Are you usually the one who goes after a guy you're interested in or do they usually make the first move? How do you seduce a guy? Did you have to go after your ex-boyfriends? Has a guy ever turn your initiatives down?
Usually it's me seducing, and it's always me abandoning. I'm waiting for the day somebody will manage to break my heart in two. That will be the happiest day of my life.
Michele from Italy
When I see paparazzi pictures of you or even some event pictures, you're always wearing the same coat, with fake fur around the neck. I think it's really cool. How long have you had it? Is it your favorite coat? Do you have any other favorite clothes?
I've had this coat for 4 years now. It's my favorite piece of clothing, ever. The others are the dresses and pants my friend Panos Yiapanis has created for me for Miss 60, like the insanely unique outfits I wore in Cannes.
Steve from
Australia
What makes a man a good lover?
Detachment
Edith Lecter from France
