Asia's Trip To Sanity

Interviewed by V.A. Musetto

August 6, 2002 -- IF Vin Diesel is the snowboarding crowd's answer to James Bond in the thriller "XXX" - then Asia Argento is a Bond girl unlike any other.

While megaplex audiences may be seeing her for the first time on Friday, the darkly seductive 26-year-old is hardly an ingenue.

Her long list of film credits includes three movies directed by her father, Italian horror master Dario Argento, best known here for "Suspiria."

Also opening Friday is "Scarlet Diva," an Italian film - about an actress obsessed with men and drugs - she wrote, directed and stars in.

"It's 100 percent autobiographical," she says.

If it weren't for "Scarlet Diva," there would be no "XXX" for Argento, who suffered a bout of depression so deep she didn't leave her apartment "for a year and a half, two years."

"My father would bring me food because I was always in pajamas and wouldn't go out to go shopping," she says.

Directing her own film helped snap her out of the sickness.

"It gave me confidence," the fiery Italian told The Post during a visit to New York.

"I didn't enjoy acting anymore. I needed to control my life and get rid of issues and people. I was very masochistic. Now I'm not that any more. It took time.

"Then I had my baby, and now I'm totally sane," the actress continued as her 13-month-old daughter, Anna Lou - the father is the singly named Italian rocker Morgan - slept in another room of Argento's hotel suite.

Argento said the blues set in after she appeared in Abel Ferrara's 1999 movie "New Rose Hotel."

"Making it was very intense for me," she explained.

"[Ferrara] taught me a lot, but he required a lot. He did some mind games with me. I was just 22 and not that strong. It took me some time to get over that."

"XXX" is a thriller about a charismatic, extreme sportsman nicknamed XXX, played by Diesel, who's recruited for a mission by the CIA.

The action hero finds himself falling hopelessly for the snake-like Argento, an agent with secrets all of her own.

Audiences will be seduced too - and may get to see more of her down the road.

She says she's open to more Hollywood films, as long as they're good ones.

"I've been offered a lot of things, but I haven't seen anything that particularly moved me," she says.

"They even offered me a movie to direct, but it's a horror movie, and I said no - I can't compete with a genius like my father."

She also wants "a lot of babies," but first, she needs a good man.

"I need a king. Guys tend to try to change me and can't accept who I am and what I've done.

"I'm a strong woman, and they don't like that. It takes away from their own machismo."

Does he have to be an Italian?

"F - - - the Italians. I don't ever want an Italian guy. They're really macho."
