Asia Argento is exhausted from 18 months of "Sarah", teenage mother of a cumbersome son, full of anger, paranoia and pills, the prey of lethal lovers. And the co-starring character of 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things', a movie directed by and with Asia Argento, based on the book by 22-year old JT Leroy. Asia Argento, who speaks to us from Los Angeles, her fatherland for the last 24 months, is also worried because her daughter Anna Lou, 32 months, has a (high) fever. We try to distract her. An attempt that will reveal itself to be a boomerang.

Do you agree with the movie title "The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things"?
..." and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"... It's an excerpt from the Bible by Jeremiah's mouth, who is also the main character of JT's book. I agree, we can have the illusion of knowing someone else's heart, but ours is only deceitful, it gives us illusions that we drink up, but reveal themselves to be unreal. Even love is one of these ubiquities.
Citing your debut film, what are your Dreams and Needs now?
That this movie will be better received than the first one, which was wrongly massacred, especially in Italy. My dream and need is to be understood. I don't want to talk anymore, to explain, the autobiography Lynch on Lynch gave me courage, he doesn't want to explain himself, because of a life choice... we let others do it.
About the misunderstood, a comment on Marilyn Manson whom you directed twice: in the video '(S)aint' and in 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things'?
He's great, a high spirit, a bright curiosity, brilliant, he's been misunderstood because of this mask he wears. I've had similar paths and weaknesses in my life. It's been like looking at myself in a mirror.
JT Leroy dedicated a lyrical peon to you on the pages of Index: "When you are accepted into her being, she looks at you with the protective gaze that you imagine Livia Drusilla cast on her husband and children to save the Roman Empire". Ben Affleck placed an ad page in Hollywood Reporter in an ode to J-Lo. Is it possible that the Argento-Leroy duo is an underground version of the Affleck-Lopez couple (Bennifer for friends)?
Oh Holy Mother, that comparison doesn't work, those two are in love, we are friends and we create things together.
And the urban legend that said that you were pregnant with Leroy Jr. by Leroy senior in the role of the courteous inseminator?
It was just that, a legend. We used a metaphor, the "semen" that he had placed in me was his book, his creature, part of his life, that I gave "birth" to, I hope that in a way that makes him proud.

I'm against the feeling of possession, my house is empty, I don't own anything, there's nothing on the walls. I hate people who put their own personalities on walls. But why don't we talk about more interesting things, I have so many in mind, is that all you want to know?

What memorable books have you read recently?
Dark Spring by the surrealistic Czech writer Unica Zurn.
A fresh and important memory fixed in your brain?
I worried a lot about my daughter's fever, scary, but also interesting, because of the childhood memories it freed. I put cold tissues on her forehead like my mother did with me. I've been standing up all night long, watching over her fever, with nobody to share my terror. I tried the tissues and homeopathy, a maternal vice, but since children suffer from the flu like flies, I gave her some antibiotics.
What do you do on insomniac nights?
I do oil painting and I'm starting to learn how to play the drums.
Will Los Angeles become your eternal home?
I don't know, I came here to shoot a film, but I can't say that I love it, it's empty, without culture, even if I like the neighborhood where I live, on a channel, after we pass the bridge there's the sea. I don't know where I'll go now, in Europe yes, in Italy no. There's no work for me there, and I don't have any friends there either, I have no family.
Do you mean that you don't consider your biological family as being your effective family?
It's in the moments of need that we recognize people...
Do you hang out with Monica Bellucci, another export item of ours?
No, my only actress friend is Valeria Golino, I would like her to live here in a stable way.
