Other Projects Random Quote "Fellini is my favourite Italian director and the reason why I adore his work is that when you watch his movies it’s real, because most of the time you’re talking about his life, but he would change the reality. It was a reality that you had to accept. It wasn’t a real reality, it was a world you had to plunge into and accept." Official Site

Director Asia Argento describes childhood sadness - May 21st 2004By Pedro Butcher Cannes 2004 arrives to its end dominated by two subjects: politics (evident in 'Fahrenheit 9/11' by Michael Moore) and child abuse and abandon, present in a lot of movies (from 'La Mala Educación', by Almodovar, to 'Nobody Knows', by Hirokazu Kore-eda). But the most radical approach comes from the eyes of Asia Argento, director and actress of 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things', showed at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. At 28, Asia Argento has made more than 30 movies as an actress, a big number of them directed by her father, the master of Italian horror Dario Argento. But she's leaving behind the title of goth cinema diva to embrace the one of "underground" filmmaker. In 2000, she debuted as a director with 'Scarlet Diva', about a star in an autodestructive journey, a story that's clearly autobiographical. Now, she took the autobiographical tale of another author in order to tell, indirectly, her own childhood. She tells us that she found in JT Leroy's homonymous book a mirror of her childhood years. "Despite the differences, which are huge, I recognized my childhood in it. The book made me think about colors, lights and smells of a world that was very similar to mine", says Asia, who plays the destructive mother of little Jeremiah, Leroy's alter ego. From an absent mother, she assumes a role that's even more perverse, repeatedly recuperating and abandoning the child, victim of all kind of abuses by the many men of her life. The kid is performed by three actors who provided exceptional performances: Jimmy Bennett, who plays Jeremiah at a young age, and the twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse, alternating themselves in the scenes where he's older. Asia assures us that her childhood wasn't that traumatic, but she recognizes that being a child, for her, was something sad. At 5, she saw one of her father's horror movies for the first time. She doesn't remember which one, but her memories aren't the best. "I'm not my analyst, so I can't say what it represented. But I won't let my daughter see horror movies at that age. It's not about moralism, I just think that young children shouldn't have this kind of experience". Asia is the mother of a 3 year-old girl and says that she is passing through a transformation phase: "This movie taught me a lot. I learned that life doesn't have to be a war all the time. I'm also learning from my daughter, fighting for her happiness". Even if it's not a conventional horror movie, the vision of childhood portrayed in 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things' is scary. "The child's world is one of injustice. I'm not referring only to children who suffered big abuses. Do you want a bigger injustice than wanting an ice cream and not being able to have it?".
Now, Asia is going to act in 'Last Days', Gus Van Sant's new movie, about the grunge musical scene. "The movie takes place in the days that anticipated Kurt Cobain's suicide. I'm from this generation, I used to love Nirvana. I think that this is going to be another personal experience".
